Since 1974, the 146th Airlift Wing has flown Lockheed C-130E Hercules. On Saturday, December 2, 2006, the 146th Airlift Wing conducted its last C-130E flight. The C-130Es have been replaced by Lockheed-Martin C-130Js and are being transferred to Little Rock Air Force Base.

Two C-130Es participated in the flight, 62-1833 and 62-1862. Both C-130Es are 44 years old. They have accrued over 46,000 flight hours. They were assigned to the 146th Tactical Airlift Wing at Van Nuys Air National Guard Base in 1974.

The 146th Tactical Airlift Wing moved to the Channel Islands Air National Guard Base, across the runway from Naval Air Station Pt Mugu, in 1988. The 146th Airlift Wing has accumulated more than 265,000 accident-free operating hours.
