Airplanes started arriving for the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport hosted Aviation Day on March 9, 2012. A variety of military aircraft stopped by the airport for gas-n-go.

Elias of Portland, Texas in 1969. Confederate Air Force Arizona Wing of Mesa, Arizona acquired it on January 11, 1973. It was damaged when it ran off a runway during landing at Mesa on October 23, 2001. It is powered by a of Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp nine-cylinder radial engine.

It was put up for dispossal at Naval Air Station at Elizabeth City, North Carolina in August 1958. Ace Smelting Incorporated of Phoenix, Aarizona acquired it in 1959. Avery Aviation of Greybull, Wyoming registered it as N2871G later that year. It flew as tanker #A20, #B21, and #A23. Hawkins and Powers Aviation of Greybull, Wyoming bought it in July 1969 and flew it as tanker 121 until all Privateer tankers were removed from service in 2003. The former Williams Air Force Base is now known as Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. In addition to serving as a civil airport, it is frequently visited by military aircraft taking advantage of its limited traffic. Several pilot training schools operate at the airport. Allegiant Air provides passenger service to airports around the country on a fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-83s. An air tanker base occasionally hosts fire fighting tankers. Boeing has a test facility for hot weather tests and Advanced Training Systems Incorporated refurbushes Douglas A-4 Skyhawks.
