Northrop replaced the two J85 turbojets in the F-5E Tiger II with a single F-404 turbofan engine to create the F-5G Tigershark. The Tigershark had a rate of climb of 54,000 feet per minute.
The prototype Northrop F-5G Tigershark 82-0062 was displayed at the Edwards Air Force Base open house on October 23, 1982. It was decked out in red and white. It also carried the civil registration N4416T

The F-5G was re-designated F-20 to emphasize its advanced design and to improve its appeal to foreign customers.
